English Idioms: Meaning and Examples

The topic this time is very simple and very useful for all. There are a lot of idioms in English and sometimes is very difficult to translate them into Arabic, but we will try to give the equivalence or meaning of which in Arabic.

The idea of this topic is that we have to choose an idiom and to give the meaning of that idiom in English or/and in Arabic and we have to put that idiom in a meaningful sentence.

I will start:

Be the apple of somebody’s eye:
Meaning in English: to be loved very much by someone

Or Meaning in Arabic: قرة عين فلان

Example: I am the apple of my father’s eye

Meaning: in one’s thoughts, but without being immediate or central concern
Example: you are at the back of my mind.

Meaning: of great, small, no, some, etc importance
Example: He is of a great account. She is of no account

ذو أهمية بالغة/ قليل الاهمية

Meaning: to be paid for later
Example: I’ll give you 20 on account. She‘ll buy it on account.

means
to die or to be defeated

Meaning: for sb’s sake

Example Don’t change your plans on my account

Meaning: certainly, even though there may be difficulties; definitely

Meaning: to make sure that you always know what is happening in a situation

Example: The finance minister found himself in hot water over his business interests.

Meaning: thing of life that cannot be ignored, however unpleasant

Example: We must all die sometime: that’s just a fact of life

Mwaning: to be part of a larger organization or involved in the work done by it

Example: The international education program came under the umbrella of the State Department.
