Marib is the archeological site most famous of Yemen. In VIth century, after the collapse of the kingdom, the old capital of Sheba was already nothing any more that a small village; it didn't change during centuries. The first European expeditions of XIXth century gave of it a description which could still apply in the 1980s

The village rests on a monticule, with its skyscrapers out of ground bored with small windows. Marib was undoubtedly inhabited well before the dates mentioned by the old writings. The human life - on the Eastern slopes where annual precipitations do not exceed 300 mm - developed around wadi collecting rainwater of vast arid extents.

It is not an ordinary sanctuary but a haram place (prohibited or taboo).
